Make the next repetition easier

Training is information. When an exercise becomes difficult, a smaller step can help you understand what to change.

Change one thing

Duration, distance and distraction are three ways an exercise changes. If you move farther away and into a busy park at once, it is harder to understand what your dog needs.

Find the comfortable starting point

Choose a quiet place where your dog can notice you, take rewards and move normally. Short practice with breaks is often more useful than repeating an exercise when either of you is frustrated.

Make a simple note

Write down the place, what you asked and what happened. A note that says the dog noticed a bicycle at a distance is more useful than saying the whole walk went badly.

Ask for support

These are general ideas, not an individual behaviour plan. If you are worried about safety, stop the exercise and discuss suitable support. Speak to your vet about sudden changes or pain.
