Before your first consultation

A little preparation helps the first conversation stay useful, without rehearsing a difficult situation.

Write down an ordinary day

Think about rest, walks, meals and the situations you would like help with. An example of when things are easy is useful too. There is no need to send a long history through an enquiry form.

Keep everyone comfortable

Do not arrange a close encounter or test a reaction for a video. If safe footage already exists, discuss how it can be shared after the trainer has replied. Give your dog space and avoid situations you already know are difficult.

Check health concerns first

A sudden behaviour change, pain concern or bite deserves veterinary advice. A trainer cannot diagnose illness. Let the professional know that you have contacted your vet.

Choose one useful goal

A quieter start to a walk or settling during a meal is a clearer first goal than a perfectly behaved dog. Your initial assessment helps set a realistic plan.
